“Solar Panel Funding did it for me. They funded the whole thing. I was incredibly cynical, but they’ve been brilliant, and I’d recommend them to anybody.”
In December 2019, Christine Woodward had six solar panels installed for her Glastonbury home, fully funded by the Solar Panel Funding (SPF) Grant.
A Glastonbury Cottage with High Winter Bills
Christine’s cottage is over 300 years old and, while full of charm, it is notoriously cold and expensive to heat.
She describes it as “like living in a cave because it’s freezing.” The heating system is a mix of night storage heaters and log burners, but, as she explains, “they’re OK but not brilliant, and they’re very expensive to run.”
Christine shares that her winter energy bills for electricity alone are “around about £500 to £600 if all the heating’s on,” with another “£150 to £200” going on wood fuel.
To cope, she cuts back wherever she can during the colder months, even avoiding the kitchen log burner because it is too costly.
“In the summer it’s not so bad, but in the winter, you skimp to pay for the high bills,” she says.
A Facebook Click Changes Everything
Until recently, Christine never considered solar as an option. “I didn’t know a lot about solar at all. I thought it was pretty much for new builds,” she admits.
With her slate roof, she assumed installation would be impossible, and with money tight, she never even looked into it. “I never thought I could afford them. My hot water bottle did until last summer,” she jokes.
One day while scrolling on Facebook, Christine sees an advert: “It came up, put your postcode in and see if you can get free solar panels.” Out of curiosity, she typed in her postcode.
When she gets a phone call, her first thought is that it must be a scam. “This is a bit strange. Something not right here. Something for free doesn’t always happen,” she says.
Even friends are sceptical. “You don’t get anything for nothing,” a builder friend warns her.
But Christine decides to proceed. There’s no long waiting list. Within weeks, she was approved.
“It was all pretty much done online. I thought there’d be a lot of competition, but no, in fact, it wasn’t like that at all. They contacted me and off it went,” she recalls.
Six Fully Funded Solar Panels Installed
Soon after, we fund the installation of six solar panels on Christine’s slate roof.
Despite her initial doubts, the system works perfectly. Christine is pleasantly surprised, “Luckily I’m getting 2 kilowatts coming from it, which is great.”
The impact is immediate. Christine is starting to see her bills ease, and for the first time she feels more secure about getting through the winter.

Who Can Get a Solar Grant?
Solar panel grants are for homeowners who want to cut energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint.
At Solar Panel Funding, we focus on helping households most in need, including older properties like Christine’s. It’s always worth checking with us directly to see if you qualify.
Solar Panel Funding is passionate about fighting fuel poverty in the UK. One of the ways we achieve this mission is by providing eligible homeowners with free solar panels to power their homes. Our approach involves connecting reliable installers with pre-screened solar appointments, and part of our revenue goes towards our SPF Grant. Any income or savings generated by the solar panel system goes directly to the homeowner.
We also offer financing options through our installer network for those interested in green solutions but facing upfront cost barriers. The SPF Grant is the only Solar Panel Grant scheme of its kind in the UK. It is not affiliated with any other supplier or vendor.
As an entity authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority, Solar Panel Funding Ltd is not a lender and does not make credit decisions. Instead, we connect applicants with solar panel installers who match loan requests with lenders on their panel.
